Vortragsreihe des Monitoringzentrums - NarcIS: Bridging Nature and Digital Innovation
Vortragender: : Dr. Alexis Zrimec (Slovenian Environment Agency)
The Slovenian Nature Information System (NarcIS) is designed to be a central digital hub for biodiversity and nature conservation data in Slovenia, addressing key gaps in managing and accessing nature-related information. The main goal of NarcIS is to bring together scattered datasets into one user-friendly platform.
NarcIS supports various users—including conservation professionals, researchers, governmental authorities, and the general public—by providing easy-to-use tools and processed data products. It offers structured access to biodiversity records, tools for managing protected areas, registries for species statuses, habitat mapping, and analytical reports tailored for practical applications in policy-making, scientific research, and daily operations.
The system integrates data from multiple organizations, with a strong focus on creating smooth interoperability among diverse data providers. Key features include intuitive web-based tools for viewing data, seamless GIS integration with QGIS, and streamlined support for administrative tasks.
Although developing NarcIS involved overcoming challenges like harmonizing different data sources and managing secure, role-based data access, the system has greatly improved data transparency and quality. Ongoing knowledge exchange and capacity building are actively supported through user involvement, regular training sessions, and the development of a vibrant user community.
