International Day of the Tree

The German ‘Day of the Tree’ was first celebrated on 25 April 1952. Federal President Theodor Heuss and the President of the German Forest Protection Association, Federal Minister Robert Lehr, planted a maple tree in Bonn's Hofgarten.

Arbor Day originated in the mid-19th century in Nebraska, a state with few trees. Traditionally, trees were planted on this day. On 27 November 1951, the United Nations finally adopted Arbor Day. It is intended to raise awareness of the importance of forests for people and the economy.
